A UPS system is designed to provide uninterrupted power. In door access applications, uninterrupted power is not always what is required. What is required is having power on demand when it is needed. This is what the GATEWAY provides.
UPS or GATEWAY?
When power fails (or is intentionally switched off) a UPS will revert to battery operation. In this event, if a door motor is not being utilised, the UPS will have a low battery drain and will remain active for several hours or until the power is restored. If power is not restored the batteries will become discharged and the UPS will switch off. The unit will not be ready for use until power has been restored and the unit has had sufficient time to recharge. In some circumstances, allowing batteries to slowly drain and being left in a discharged state will cause the batteries to become over discharged. This means that in a lot of cases, the UPS will not start up even when power is returned. This of course can prevent access to the building.
The GATEWAY-SX overcomes this drawback by being activated when needed, instead becoming an on demand power source, rather than a UPS. This allows an installation to be without power for weeks or even months, and the GATEWAY will still be ready to go.
Sleep Function Compatible
The GATEWAY-SX utilises RJ11 connector on the rear of the unit for connection to a compatible door controller with a UPS sleep function. This provides a +24Vdc supply for the controller circuit and for the activate signal.
If no compatible controller is used the unit can be wired (via the RJ connector) to an external keyswitch, or, using the +24V battery to a wireless relay circuit.
GABY Wrap Around Automagic Bypass
If you’re not using a sleep enabled controller then GABY is the accessory you need for the GATEWAY-SX to provide a power resilient solution. GABY is a mains first priority bypass. What this means is that if mains power is present it is always presented to the door controller. If mains power should fail, then, upon starting up the GATEWAY – from a remote keyswitch or wireless relay – then the power from the GATEWAY is presented to the motor controller. In such situations the GATEWAY is switched off, meaning that there is no battery drain (unless you are utilising the +24V output for a wireless relay) and so the battery will remain in a good state of charge for weeks and months even with no mains power available. This is very useful if the mains power is regularly switched off to an outbuilding for example. When no mains power is present, activate the GATEWAY from a remote switch wired to either of the RJ connectors and the GATEWAY-SX will start up and deliver power to the motor controller. You can then operate the door as normal.
GABY comes with built in IEC connections but can be supplied configured as required.
