Our customer needed a Router & ONT UPS to provide 1 hour backup for premises where their client was considered to be “vulnerable”. This is an OFCOM requirement is to allow Telecare services (such as alarm monitors and being able to make and receive calls) to be continued in the event of a power cut.

In this instance, it wasn’t just a single piece of equipment that needed backed up, it was the router as well as the ONT. After testing the iPower-DC2 orders were quickly placed and the roll out started within 2 months.

The iPower-DC2 does not come as standard with an AC power adapter, as this would cause unnecessary waste and expense if the adapter that came with the modem or ONT was suitable. However as the iPower-DC2 was a router and ONT UPS, the power requirement was in excess of any of their existing adapters, and so a 12V 3A adapter was included.

Furthermore, the unit comes with 2x 30cm DC-DC output leads as standard, but due to the unknown distances between the iPower-DC2 and the devices, two extra 2m DC-DC leads were bundled as standard. All the additional accessories are bundled in the same inner box.

Why the iPower-DC2 as a router and ONT UPS?

Power Capacity

The DC2 can support loads of up to 30W, which is more than enough for a typical router and ONT.

Connectivity

iPower-DC2 as a router and ONT UPS. Rear panel connections

The unit has 5 output jacks for a variety of equipment. In this case only two outputs are required. Note there is also a useful USB backed up port. In this case the client opted for 2 optional 2m leads to connect the loads. An optional DIN rail mounting bracket is also available for mounting the DC2 within an enclosure or on a wall.

Simplicity

Since the devices were all 12V, simply set the selector switch to 12V and plug in. That’s it. You now have a stable 12Vdc output on all ports. The front panel indicates the battery status, if it’s charging or discharging or fully charged.

The 1 hour Runtime Requirement.

The powerful 10,000mAh internal battery will provide at least 1 hour runtime for a load of 25W and far more for typical use loads. For example, at 12W you can expect 2½ hours.
