Benefits:
Higher Power Density
This means that they can provide more power from less, resulting in systems that are smaller and lighter and yet provide comparable if not more runtime for the same load as lead acid. For example, in a test of the KR2000RM-Li, vs the KR3000RM (Lead Acid), the KR Lithium Ion UPS provided 15 minutes runtime whereas the KR3000 was 5. What’s remarkable is that the lithium UPS weighs less than half as much.
Longer Life
Lithium Ion batteries have more cycle life than lead acids. A typical VRLA is 200-300 cycles and 3-5 year life. A Lithium Ion is 1000+ cycles and 8-10 year life. They can also operate without degradation at higher temperatures. Lead acids will start to deteriorate over 30°C and exponentially so over 40°C. Lithium Ion units can be used up to 60°C. If you need to operate a UPS with high cyclic rates or in high ambient temperatures then opt for Lithium Ion UPS.
Lower Total Cost of Ownership
The capital expenditure of a lithium ion UPS appears much higher than an equivalent lead acid, however:
- Replacement of VRLA batteries has to occur 2-3 times more frequently than Li-Ion
- VRLA batteries will deteriorate rapidly in hot conditions where Li-Ion are unaffected
- Li-Ion UPS occupies less real estate and therefore £/m2 or $/ft2 is more cost effective.
- Li-Ion charges more efficiently and quickly than lead acid, saving on energy costs.
Over a 10yr period Li-Ion is estimated to be at least 30% lower Total Cost of Ownership than a lead acid UPS.
